Many celebrities have started urging the government to protect the animal rights, post Brexit. In this campaign called Better Deal for Animals, more than 20 celebrities have come together, including Jilly Cooper, Bill Oddie, Shenita Etwaroo, Joanna Lumley, and many more. They are demanding that the existing laws for animals should be maintained, even when Britain is not the part of EU. The existing laws are called Lisbon Treaty, where animals are considered as sentient beings, who can feel and understand pain.
The group of celebrities and 36 more prominent charities shared, “The welfare of billions of animals is at risk if the Government does not put in place a new law to replicate current EU animal protections. Losing these would mean that British governments would no longer be bound to ensure good standards of animal welfare when creating laws and policies.”
Michael Gove, the Environment Secretary, shared that the animal sentience would be recognized. He shared, “Animals are sentient beings who feel pain and suffering, so it is absolutely right that we recognise this in UK law after we leave the EU. Our plans to increase protections for animals include raising the maximum sentence for animal cruelty from six months to five years and banning third-party sales of puppies and kittens. I will continue to make sure we have the strongest legal protections in place for our animals.”
